Malcolm X was a street hustler. He was convicted of robbery, thus he had to be in prison for 7 years. While he was there, he was frustrated at not being able to express what he wanted to convey in letters. But he met Bimbi who had a great deal of knowledge. Bimbi had always taken charge of any conversations he was in. That made Malcolm envies of him and got him studied. He started to pick up some books, which were not helpful to him at first. After moving to another prison, he changed his strategy. He saw that the best thing he could do was get hold of a dictionary – to study, to learn some words. For 2 days, he just riffled through the dictionary page, and then he realized so many words existed at last. But the thing was that he didn’t know which words he needed to learn. He decided to copy it, for example, painstaking, ragged handwriting, he copied into his tablet everything printed on that first page, down to the punctuation marks. Then, he read aloud and back, everything he’d written on the tablet over and over. The next morning, he woke up, thinking about words he wrote down. Surprisingly, with a little effort, he could remember what many of these words meant, even if the funny thing was that a new word but with a picture sprang to his mind. Anyway, he was getting interested in studying. That thing was on and on, besides by copying and studying the dictionary, he could extend his knowledge: people, places, and events from history. After completing the dictionary’s A section, he started the B’s. It went a lot faster after so much practice helped him to pick up handwriting speed. Between what he wrote in his tablet, and writing letters, during the rest of his time in prison he would guess he wrote a million words. This is the way he broadened his vocabulary, also now he began to understand what the book was saying. That’s why he could open the new world. This way became part of his daily life, namely his habit. His eager for reading went on with at least glow. So anything or anyone couldn’t take any books from him. First of all, his favorite genre was the history about a black man, or Negro. During that time, his people had been suffered from race discrimination. With the help of books and Mr. Muhammad’s teaching, he realized how black people were great before the black slave was brought to the United States. Moreover, he was very shocked about the way white people did to black men. That’s why he became one of the most articulate and powerful leaders of black America during the 1960s. While he was alive, he stated that right there in prison reading had changed forever the course of his life. At first, he was shamed of himself about not being able to write what he wanted to say. But meeting an intelligent person, he started to study with a dictionary, just copied it and memorized all of the words by reading over and over. It also made him read a lot of books. This kind of intensive reading made him be aware of a real world for black people. That is, he opened the new world through reading. So the writing and reading was so precious to him. This Malcolm X reminds me of one of the celebrities. He was in prison because of habitually smoking marijuana. But while he was taking time for self-examination, he stated to read a lot. After he completed his penalty, he looked different. Reading made him mature. I think these two cases are very similar. Also I want to follow Malcolm’s style, if possible.
Lee suggests: Your writing was nice. One problem was that you wrote a one-paragraph-essay. Please think about arranging your ideas in paragraphs instead of a block of endless sentences. :-)
Thank you.
