Week 3 Malcolm X, Mr. Kim HS

For the first time in America, black Obama became the president of the U.S.A.  Many people’s attention was drawn to him and I myself became to read the book about Obama.  Martin Luther King and Malcolm X came to popular because of Obama.  But when it comes to Malcolm X, I feel sorry for him.  I have known Martin Luther King from reading books but Malcolm X was not so much popular, so I did not know him until now.  Through this assignment I could know how much extent language influenced to his life.  Malcolm X began to learn to read by himself because of his letters.  It was in the Charlestown that he learned to read trying to imitate Bimbi.  Whenever he tried to read books, there were so many words he did not understand, so he just skipped those words, of course, he ended up with little idea of what the book said.  He came to Norfolk Prison Colony still going through only book-reading motions and he tried to memorize the whole dictionary to study and learn words.  He said that he felt real freedom memorizing the dictionary and words and reading books in prison.  Through reading and writing, he might have seen the hope getting out of the contradiction he had.  It was very impressive for me his quick acquisition of the language which was the means of freedom and hope.  I felt that language is just an instrument but the sharpness and usefulness of language could let human free.  For Malcolm X to read and write was the means that having eyes that could see the truth, I think.  He said that it was the prison that he could realize his ignorance and overcome it, and his reading and writing became the key to come his dream true, I think.  He thought that real peace was to be equal with the white not by favor of the white but by the black themselves and to make peace not under pax-white but by the black themselves.  That was Malcolm X’s real dream.

Reading this book, I felt that what he/she says and does tells his/her future.  His creed was he should speak the words people could understand.  This book is very familiar to American, and it is said that many young people who did not finish schooling became other people after reading this novel.  It is obvious that Malcolm X’s words and doing give us a lesson.  He showed me hope and possibility through his learning to read and write
